THE LINNAEAN PLANT NAME TYPIFICATION PROJECT

Charlie Jarvis & Steve Cafferty, The Natural History Museum, London, U.K.

Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778) introduced the consistent use of binomial names, validly publishing over 9000 plant names. Since 1981 this Project has collated information on published type designations for Linnaean plant names, collaborating with specialists in making new typifications where required. The Project's aim is to produce a comprehensive catalogue of type designations for all Linnaean names. For a given name, Linnaeus often cited elements (specimens, illustrations) which are taxonomically diverse. Any type designation is therefore made in consultation with either a taxonomic or regional specialist. Recently, the Project has been studying untypified Linnaean names by group, resulting in publications dealing with previously untypified names for the lichens, Fabaceae, Asteraceae and Orchidaceae. Papers are in preparation dealing with names in the Poaceae and Lamiaceae.
