We have cloned cDNA encoding tobacco protein kinase NPK5 homologous to both yeast SNF1 and mammalian AMPK, SNF1 is required for derepression of many glucose-repressible genes, and AMPK regulates key enzymes such as HMG-CoA reductase and acetyl-CoA carboxylase of lipid metabolism. We here shows evidences of NPK5 on the regulation of both sugar and lipid metabolism in plant, including transgenic studies. And also discuss the functional variation of NPK5 homologue in plants, yeast SNF1 and mammalian AMPK.
