OVERVIEW OF FILAMENTOUS FUNGAL GENOMICS

J. W. Bennett, Dept. Cell & Molecular Biology, Tulane Univ., New Orleans, LA 70118 USA

Filamentous fungi have genomes that are roughly an order of magnitude larger than bacterial genomes. Nevertheless, with advances in sequencing technology, and an expansion in the number of sequencing facilities, it will soon be feasible to complete the genomes of several filamentous fungi. At least two species of Aspergillus have been the subject of major projects in industry, and several econimically important plant pathogens are also being scrutinized in the private sector. In the public sector, genomics projects are underway for a number of yeasts, genetic models, and human pathogens. The status of these projects, the major sources of funding, international collaborations, and prospects for future work will be discussed.
