Monosulcate angiosperms are of considerable interest in terms of phylogenetic relationships and character evolution. We have recently added 26S rDNA sequence data to a three-gene data set of rbcL, atpB, and 18S rDNA to resolve critical portions of the monosulcate topology. The 26S rDNA topology is concordant with earlier combined analyses based on rbcL, atpB, and 18S rDNA . 26S rDNA topology reveals Nymphaeales, Amborellaceae, and Illiciales are successive sisters to the remaining angiosperms. We present combined phylogenetic analyses of all four genes and explore the molecular evolution of 26S rDNA.
