MORPHOLOGICAL PATTERNS IN LAMIALES S.L.

Lucinda A. McDade, EEB Dept., Univ. of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721 USA

Lamiales s.l. is arguably one of the most distinctive lineages within Asteridae. The lineage is marked by a number of morphological synapomorphies and these have been corroborated by molecular evidence in a number of studies. Within Lamiales, several traditional family-level groups are well-marked by synapomorphies (e.g., Acanthaceae, Gesneriaceae) whereas others are not. Central to this problem is the possibility that plants traditionally grouped as Scrophulariaceae comprise several monophyletic lineages. Because of the dubious monophyly of some traditional groupings, a placeholder approach has been taken in this study of phylogenetic relationships based on morphology. Results from molecular analyses have been used both to help select taxa for analysis and to identify basal Lamiales for use in polarizing character conditions.
