Conservation for profit, multidisciplinary thinking in a multi-media context.

Miriam Kritzer Van Zant, Dept. of Plant Biology, Southern Illinois Univ.

Managing wild land to protect the heritage: Native and naturalized plants, an experiment in conservation for profit is a CD with the objective of increasing opportunities for biodiversity by explaining to land owners and managers how to potentially profit from land left in a wild or semi-wild state. The program explains underlying concepts including conservation, biodiversity, economic and ethno-botany and restoration ecology. In addition the CD concludes with taxonomic descriptions, scans and animated 3-D drawings, intended to assist with identification of natives to be encouraged, and invasives to be removed. These plants have been examined for their reported ethnobotanical use, their efficacy in pharmacognosy studies, their toxicity, and some information is included on their ecological status and current marketability. A voice track matches the written script to appeal to different kinds of learners.
