It is now established that all plants possess hemoglobins (Hbs). In contrast to the well studied symbiotic Hbs, such as those from legume root nodules, there is limited information on the non-symbiotic Hbs. Non-symbiotic Hbs are present in trace amounts and have essentially eluded successful purification from tissue extracts. In this report, we will present our recent research on the purification of Hbs from rice tissue extracts and their properties in solution. These data will be discussed in relation to what is known about the recombinant rice Hbs.
