Genetic analysis of infection of rice CO39 by M. grisea 2539 (avirulent) and Guy11 (virulent) has revealed a gene-for-gene interaction. The gene conferring cultivar-specificity with CO39 was isolated from M. grisea strain 2539. DNA sequence of the minimal 1.05 kb fragment has revealed seven, small ORFs. The distribution of AVR1-CO39 was investigated: all isolates from Setaria while few from rice contain putative homologs. Analysis of the AVR1-CO39 locus from rice isolate Guy11 indicated that the region was absent. The corresponding disease resistance gene in rice maps to chromosome 11. Progress on the isolation of Pi-CO39 (t) will be presented.
