SHOOT APICAL MERISTEMS: MORPHOLOGICAL, ANATOMICAL AND MOLECULAR MARKERS

Judy Jernstedt, Agronomy and Range Sci., UC Davis, USA

Shoots of land plants (sensu lato) vary from the diminutive gametophytes of mosses and leafy liverworts to the imposing sporophytes of angiosperms. Shoots are characterized by apical meristems of varying degrees of complexity which are loosely correlated with the complexity of the resulting shoot system. Shoot apical meristem (SAM) structure is analyzed in terms of cytologically distinct zones, presence or absence of a single apical cell, and the planes of cell division. A diversity of genes such as homeobox genes and MADS homeotic genes have counterparts in distantly related taxa (conifers, fern). The phylogenetic and functional relationships of these taxa and genes will be discussed.
