Obligate parasites exhibit varying degrees of host specificity. Some ascomycete fungi of the Laboulbeniales are reported to display restricted occurrence on their arthropod hosts, e.g., on a single sex (sex of host specificity) or on a precise body-part (position specificity). Some patterns may be explained by transmission mode, but others require molecular characters to delimit closely related species. Use of nuc-ssu rDNA and ITS characters in preliminary studies, indicates that taxa of Stigmatomyces described from different positions on the same fly host are of the same species. Position specificity is unlikely to be supported.
