USING THE LIVING COLLECTIONS IN BOTANICAL GARDENS FOR EFFECTIVE EDUCATION

Edelmira Linares, Jardin Botanico del Instituto de Biologia de la Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico

In Mexico as in other Botanical Gardens of the world the living collections represent an incredible resource for developing formal and informal educational programs. Here we present some of our experiences which are based upon working with different groups using as a base our living plant collections. Our program of guided tours has been enriched with ethnobotanical information, workshops and didactic games to improve the visitorīs interest and knowledge. Other experiences include the work with high school teachers designing practical exercises related with their curriculum, which they supervised in schools. Our program also offers workshops for the general public and university students at different levels. We will present some examples of courses, workshops and informal experiences with children.
