During a survey of geniculate coralline algae from Brazil diminute plants of Jania growing as epiphyte on deep-water marine Phaeophyceae were studied and identified as Jania pumila Lamouroux. Morphological and reproductive studies were made by optical microscopy and SEM analysis. The sexual (monoecious or dioecious) and asexual reproductive patterns were observed. The asexual reproduction by terminal triangular propagules and their development into a new plant were documented for the first time to this species. Propagules in genus Jania are uncommon structures being described only to J. capillacea from Pacific Mexican and J. minuta from Southeastern Australia. UEFS/CAPES/CNPq.
