XVI International Botanical Congess
During a survey of geniculate coralline algae from Brazil, two species of Cheilosporum were found: C. cultratum (Harvey) Areschoug and C. sagittatum (Lamouroux) Areschoug. Martens had referred C. cultratum to Brazil one hundred and thirty-five years ago and this species has now been rediscovery. Its Brazilian distribution is restrict. C. sagittatum is distributed through the littoral zones of southeastern and south Brazil. Detailed studies of thallus structure and reproductive development were made by optical microscopy and SEM analysis. Female/carposporangial conceptacles and early post-fertilization stages are described for the first time to C. sagittatum.. The taxonomic position of previous species of Cheilosporum referred to Brazil was clarified. CNPq/UEFS/CAPES.
