The Cladonia furcata group, including 14 species closely related to C. furcata, has been placed in sect. Ascyphiferae. However, it is hard to list morphological and chemical features that delimit this section from sect. Perviae. I examined their phylogenetic relationships using molecular characters of nuclear SSU rDNA and ITS. Preliminary results suggest that sect. Ascyphiferae, represented by C. furcata, C. macroptera, C. scabriuscula, and C. subrangiformis, is monophyletic and contains a signature sequence distinct from sect. Perviae, represented by its type C. cenotea, and other sections of Cladonia. I will continue the study by analyzing additional genes and by examining morphological characters that could define the species and sect. Ascyphiferae.
