Foc is an asexual phytopathogenic fungus which causes vascular wilt in banana plants. In Foc heterokaryons are formed by hyphal anastomosis. The goal of our research is to observe heterokaryotic cells in Foc via fluorescent microscopic analysis. We will present data from observations of events surrounding heterokaryon formation using fluorescent stains specific for nucleic acids, cell wall differentiation, and viability in vegetatively compatible and incompatible pairings. In addition, hyphal tips of heterokaryons will be analyzed for genotype of parental strains and number of nuclei present.Funded by NIGMS/NIH grant#SO6GM08205
