EARLY EVOLUTIONARY PROCESS OF THE MONOCOTYLEDONS INFERRED FROM MATK DNA SEQUENCES WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE PHYLOGENY OF MELANTHIACEAE S. LAT.

Shizuka Fuse & Minoru N. Tamura, Bot. Gard., Osaka City Univ., Japan

The present strict consensus topology of parsimonious trees of the monocots generated by matK DNA sequence analysis proved to be primarily similar to that by rbcL DNA sequence analysis (Chase et al. 1995). According to the matK topology, Acorus is first diverged within the monocots, and two major clades are formed: one consisting of Arac., Alismatac. and a part of Melanthiac. s. lat. (Tofieldia-group), and the other of Liliales (Colchicac., Trilliac., Liliac., Calochortac., Smilacac.), Anthericac., Convallariac., Orchidac., Commelinac., Zingiberac., Palmae, Pandanac., Dioscoreac., and a part of Melanthiac. s. lat. (Veratrum-group, Narthecium-group, Petrosavia). Within the latter clade, Veratrum-group is included in Liliales. Narthecium-group is grouped with Dioscoreac. Petrosavia is isolated.
