Somatic embryos developed from carrot callus on MS basal medium showed cotyledonary abnormalities of 54 %, and were poorly germinable(60%). When the callus was cultured on medium with 10 ¥ìM TIBA or under light illumination, the total production of embryos was profoundly enhanced to about 5 times. The average regeneration rate of somatic embryos including anomalous embryos was 68%. To enhance the regeneration rate of anomalous embryos the embryogenic callus was cultured in ventilated petridishes, those embryos formed in the petridishes were more regenerable (85%) than those in unventilated petridishes (68%). As a result the production of carrot plantlets and somatic embryos was clearly enhanced on medium with TIBA or under light illumination.
