The phylogenetic potential of entire 26S ribosomal DNA sequences has been demonstrated in flowering plants and the recent rediscovery of Takhtajania allowed intensive phylogenetic examinations for the Winteraceae and their related family, Canellaceae, using various gene sequences. The entire sequences of 26S rDNA were analyzed to test the congruence of phylogenetic trees based on different genes and to examine the phylogenetic position of Winteraceae in the broad picture of flowering plant phylogeny. The 26S sequence data also support the inclusion of Takhtajania at the base of the Winteraceae and the close relationship between Winteraceae and Canellaceae.
