A NEW TAXON OF IPOMOEA TRILOBA L. (CONVOLVULACEAE) FROM NIGERIA

K.O. OGUNWENMO (Dept. of Marine, Biology and Fisheries, University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria)

Meissner(1869) in Martius, Fl. Brasil. described three varieties (genuina(alpha), glaberrima(Beta) and eustachiana Jacq.) of I. triloba. Two (alpha, beta) are found in Nigeria. Herbarium, Field and Cultivation studies revealed a new variety of widespread distribution in the South-West and East. Hybridization experiments suggest the new variety may have evolved from crosses between vars. triloba (syn. var. glaberrima) and genuina. A key for the identification of the new taxa is provided.
