K.O. OGUNWENMO (Dept. of Marine, Biology and Fisheries, University of Lagos, Lagos, Nigeria)

Previous infrageneric treatments (Choisy, Mem. Soc. Phys. Geneve (1834), Griseb.Fl.Br. W.Ind. Is.(1864), Hall. f.,Bot. Jahrb.(1893), Bak. & Rendle, F.T.A.(1905), Verdc.,F.T.E.A.(1963) etc.) were revised. Based on overall similarities of observable morphorlogical characters from field and herbarium studies, the following classification was proposed for species in our area: subg. Dasychaetia Hall.f., Orthipomoea Choisy, Ipomoea emend., Batatas (Choisy) Griseb. emend., Quamoclit(Moench)Hall.f.emend., Erpipomoea Choisy emend. The justification for species allocation and section reallignment in four of the six genera will be discussed.
