Leaf trichome morphology and density were evaluated using SEM to assess their relative distribution in T. africana, T. orientalis and T. nitens. Unicellular trichome shape, unicellular and multicellular trichome densities and the number of cells composing the stalk of multicellular trichomes were evaluated. The results suggest dependence between species and unicellular trichome shape and that trichome densities on the lower leaf surface as well as the number of cells composing the stalk of multicellular trichomes on the upper leaf surface are different between the three species. Although difficult to assess on the field, these characters might be useful when species identity is doubtful.
