THERAPEUTIC EVALUATION OF SOUTH AMERCIAN HEPATITIS REMEDIES

MEMORY ELVIN-LEWIS, WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY, ST. LOUIS, MO. 63130. U.S.A

To determine the therapeutic value of hepatitis remedies, ethnomedical focusing techniques requires that an inventory of plant use be established, that preferences, formulae and treatment regimens be recorded and allopathic clinical and serologic criteria be applied. The disease of hepatitis was selected because of recognizable clinical parameters, known etilogy (HBV & HDV) and high incidence. While remedies among mestizo and indigenous populations were generally distinctive, both had therapeutic merit. An important discovery was that certain medicinal herbs could serve as satisfactory alternatives to trees that were being extirpated in areas of high demand.
