XVI International Botanical Congess
Fungal palynomorphs including spores, hyphae and fruiting bodies were recovered from the clastic rock samples of Goldsboro, Ivanhoe, Lock, Tar River and Willis Creek localities of the Tar Heel Formation (Early Campanian) of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North Carolina, USA. The morphological types exhibited variations in their cell number, size and arrangement of septa. The diversity is shown by the presence of unicellate, dicellate, tetracellate and multicellate forms. Pluricellaesporites (multicellate) shows a general trend of increased abundance from lower to higher levels at the localities. The diversity of fungal palynomorphs along with angiosperm radiation is suggestive of an ongoing coevolution between the fungi and the flowering plants.
