All the 55 Hypomyces species with a known teleomorph and the related, presumably anamorphic species grow on homobasidiomycetes or discomycetes. Phylogenetic analyses of nuclear 28S rDNA data reveal Hypomyces to be paraphyletic, forming one clade with species of Aphysiostroma, Arachnocrea, Hypocrea and Sphaerostilbella. Based on morphological and molecular evidence, we suggest removing species with Acremonium and Gliocladium anamorphs from Hypomyces. The anamorphic Cladobotryum species are shown to be closely related to various pleomorphic Hypomyces species having similar anamorphs. All these species with Cladobotryum anamorphs form a phenotypically well-defined group that appears paraphyletic in the analyses of molecular data. Neither do the species with aleurioconidia form a monophyletic group.
