Diameter growth, recruitment and mortality of trees were studied over a 6.7-year period in the Atlantic forest of Cardoso Island, SP, Brazil. In a permanent plot of 1 ha, trees were measured in two census (1987-89 and 1995). In the first one, 742 trees were measured in the dominant component (>10 cm DBH) and 397 trees in the sub-bosque (2.5>DBH<10 cm). The species were classified according to abundance, diameter classes of the trees and characteristics in the successional process. The annual growth, recruitment and mortality considering all species and trees >10 cm DBH was 0.0968 cm/y, 2.52% and 2.11%, respectively, and 0.0606 cm/y, 2.23% and 3.96%, for trees 2.5>DBH<10 cm. These values approximate of those in other studies of demography of trees in tropical rain forest.
