CHARACTERIZATION OF PLAGIOMONAS AMYLOSA STAT. ET SP. NOV. AND PHYLOGENY OF BLUE/GREEN CRYPTOMONADS

Brec Clay and Paul Kugrens Department of Biology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado 80523, USA

A new species of freshwater blue/green cryptomonad, Plagiomonas amylosa stat. et sp. nov., is described, and a marine blue/green cryptomonad isolate was confirmed with electron microscopy to be Falcomonas daucoides. Complete ssu rRNA gene sequences for P. amylosa and F. daucoides were obtained. Plagiomonas Butcher is ranked as a subgenus of Hemiselmis based on blue/green coloration. This freshwater Plagiomonas species possesses the same general features described for marine species, but it differs in having a slightly different morphology, an eyespot, and multiple, single thylakoids penetrate the pyrenoid. Phylogenetic analyses of P. amylosa and F. daucoides indicate a monophyletic origin for all blue/green cryptomonads. The origin of the cryptomonad midventral band also is discussed.
