INSIGHTS ON NORTH AMERICAN FLORISTICS FROM THE FLORA OF NORTH AMERICA PROJECT (FNA)

Luc Brouillet, Institut de recherche en biologie végétale, Univ. Montréal, Canada

How has FNA contributed to floristic knowledge in North America north of Mexico? The revision of herbarium material and the critical taxonomic revision of complex groups by treatment authors, and the regional review process have led to new contributions to our knowledge of the distribution of the North American flora: redefinition of the range of critical taxa, range extensions, including new state records, better delimitation of ranges in Canada. The floristic relationship between Greenland and North America is better revealed. Examples will be used to illustrate these finds, mostly drawn from northeastern North America. New insights on the distribution patterns of plants in North America will emerge continually from FNA, and global syntheses will eventually be made possible through this collective effort.
