Chlamydomonas reinhardtii responds to sulfur deprivation stress by inducing arylsulfatase and other proteins, increasing sulfate uptake, ceasing cell division and down-regulating photosynthesis. A mutant strain of C. reinhardtii, ars401 shows no or decreased responses to sulfur deprivation, no detectable arylsulfatase activity, no significant change in the profile of peliplasmic proteins and decreased activation of the sulfur uptake system. Otherwise, this mutant shows normal responses to phosphorus@deficiency. These results suggest that the mutation affects specifically a wide range of sulfur deprivation responses. Cloning of the gene is now in progress by using inserted sequences.
