Taxonomy and geographic distribution of Mimosa have been studied as part of the Flora del Bajio project. The Bajio is one of the most important economic regions of Central Mexico because of the human activities taking place there: urban and industrial development, mineral extraction, agriculture and grazing, therefore natural vegetation has been deeply affected. Even though, diverse vegetation types are found, Mexico is the second distribution center of Mimosa after Brazil. 102 species occur in the country (20% of the whole genus), 13 (12%) have been found in the Bajio and 11 (84%) of these are endemic to Mexico. A key to species, their relationships, nomenclature and distribution patterns are presented.
