PHYLOGENY OF THE CONEFLOWERS (HELIANTHEAE: ASTERACEAE) BASED ON NUCLEAR RDNA THE INTERNAL TRANSCRIBED (ITS) AND EXTERNAL TRANSCRIBED SPACER (ETS) SEQUENCES

L. E.Urbatsch and B. G. Baldwin. Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge and University of California, Berkely.

The ITS and ETS regions of 18S-26S nuclear ribosomal DNA were sequenced in over 60 taxa representing most species in Dracopis, Echinacea, Ratibida, and Rudbeckia, and 20 other outgroup genera of tribe Heliantheae. Results of parsimony analysis of the two rDNA data sets by themselves uphold the hypothesis from an earlier cpDNA restriction site study that Echinacea is not closely related to the other three genera of coneflowers. The data support placement of Echinacea in subtribe Zinniinae. The remaining three coneflower genera represent a monophyletic lineage. The rDNA data support two sublineages in Rudbeckia congruent with the traditionally recognized subgenera, Macrocline and Rudbeckia.
