J. H. Beaman, R. S. Beaman, and A. G. Thomas (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, TW9 3AB, UK, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611, USA)

A location map and gazetteer have been prepared for Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia using GIS technology. The data in digital form make it useful not only for plotting and displaying species occurrences but also for many other biological, geological, anthropological, and tourism applications. Topographic data were obtained from 1:50,000 contour maps. Placement of most other features was interpreted from a Landsat TM image. The image was rectified with data obtained by GPS, the location of some roads and settlements also was realized with GPS data. Place names were obtained primarily by interviewing local people at many different locations on the mountain. The gazetteer includes about 500 place names located to the nearest degree, minute, and second of latitude and longitude.
