Apostasia and Neuwiedia form the subfamily Apostasioideae (Orchidaceae) with 15 species mainly in South East Asia. Traditionally they were placed at the base of orchids, this is also supported by molecular (Cameron & al.) and non-molecular analyses (Freudenstein & Rasmussen). However, no information has been available on the topology within Apostasioideae. We have produced sequences of nuclear ribosomal ITS, chloroplast ndhF and mitochondrial rpl2 of several apostasioid species and several related taxa to study the relationship within the apostasioids. Our results indicate that Apostasioideae are monophyletic, and they do not support separation of the two genera into two subfamilies. The results are also supported by our studies on early floral development.
