XVI International Botanical Congess
While repeating elements such as modules and metamers are well-known features in plant development, repeating patterns of cell division have not received as much attention. The significance of such patterns often has to do with tissue differentiation, but sometimes they are associated with organogenesis. Certain of these repeating patterns of cell division can be simulated by means of simple rules based on the successive re-labelling of cell wall states (L-systems). A principal feature of the patterns to be described is that new growth centres continually emerge. Consideration will be given to the cellular elements which may maintain these patterns.
