Bryophyte phylogenetic trees were constructed based on about 700 bp long portion of non-coding cpDNA inverted repeat ITS 2 - 4. Sequence data for 35 bryophyte species, several vascular plants and Chara as an outgroup were analyzed. The deepest dichotomy is between liverworts and all other land plants. There is a clear distinction with 100% bootstrap support between Marchantiopsida and Jungermanniopsida. Liverworts form a sister group to the clade including sister-related Bryopsida and Anthoceropsida, as well as a separate lineage of vascular plants. Details of interrelationships within the main bryophyte groups following from phylogenetic trees will be discussed.
