GENERIC DELIMITATION OF MONNINA (POLYGALACEAE)

Ramon Ferreyra, MSM, Peru & Alina Freire-Fierro, Herbario QCNE

The genus Monnina, originally described by Ruiz & Pavon, comprises about 180 species and occurs from Southern Mexico to Chile, Brazil and Argentina. This genus, originally divided into the subgenera Monnina, Monninopsis and Pterocarya, was later divided into two genera and recently divided into the genera Monnina, Ancylotropis and Pteromonnina. Although most of the species can clearly be placed in either of these three groups, some species from one group share morphological characters, such as habit, corolla number and fruit type with the other groups. This treatment will address these difficulties. As part of the treatment of Monnina for Flora Neotropica, we have done a detailed morphological analysis of South American species and concluded that Monnina should encompass all the species currently placed in Ancylotropis and Pteromonnina, as well as the species currently placed in Monnina.
