GENERIC DELIMITATION IN BASAL PHYLLANTHOIDEAE

Petra Hoffmann, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, U.K.

Several genera of Euphorbiaceae-Phyllanthoideae considered to be basal in the subfamily are currently under revision in collaboration with G. McPherson (MO). Examination of particularly the Madagascan taxa indicates the need to revise certain generic boundaries. In the tribe Wielandieae, this is discussed for the taxa around Savia which include Blotia, Petalodiscus, Wielandia, and a new genus to be segregated. Molecular evidence suggests that the two sections of Savia s.str. belong to different tribes, thus calling for the recognition of yet another genus. In the tribe Phyllantheae, two new species to be described from Madagascar stand between Andrachne, Leptopus and Meineckia. In order to accommodate them at least one generic circumscription will have to be changed, or a new genus created. Finally it is discussed whether Cyathogyne in the tribe Antidesmeae should be recognised as a genus separate from Thecacoris.
