The Phylogeny of 28 species of 18 genera, representing all tribes and subtribes of Hamamelidioideae (sensu Endress), was constructed based on nrDNA ITS sequences using parsimony, neighbor-joining, maximum likelihood methods. 3 main clades were strongly supported. Combined with the available data on wood anatomy, floral morphology and vascular anatomy, vegetation morphology, and geographical distribution, exine structure etc., 3 tribes could be recognized: 1) Loropetaleae Zhang. tribe. nov. : Corylopsis, Maingaya, Matudeae, Embolanthera, Tetrathyrium and Loropetalum, 2) Dicorypheae Zhang. tribe. nov.: Dicoryphe, Trichocladus, Neostrearia, Ostrearia, Noadendron, Eustigma, Fortunearia, Sinowilsonia and Molinadendron, 3) Hamamelideae A. D. : Fothergilla, Hamamelis, Parrotiopsis, Distylium, Distyliopsis, Sycopsis, Parrotia and Shaniodendron.
