Recently, Lindernia micrantha biotypes resistant to sulfonylurea herbicides (acetolactate synthase inhibitor) have been reported from four separate locations in Japan. Serious yield losses are observed at the fields where the resistant byotypes have prevailed. To stop the rapid spread of resistant biotypes, their origin and dispersal mechanisms should be studied. In this study, we applied the inter simple sequence repeat markers and the DNA sequencing of acetolactate synthase gene to estimate the genetic variability of resistant and susceptible biotypes of L. micrantha. Then, we discussed the relationships among these biotypes and the possibility of multiple founding events of resistant biotypes with multiple resistant alleles by seed and/or pollen dispersal.
