Forty seven species were investigated using ITS and RuBisCo spacer sequences. These results indicate that the taxa are grouped into a single clade while each family is not monophyletic. Phylogenetically supported 8 groups were recognized: the Alaria group (Alaria, Pterygophora, Undaria and Lessoniopsis), Ecklonia group (Ecklonia, Eckloniopsis and Eisenia), Egregia group, Laminaria group, Hedophyllum group (Hedophyllum, Arthrothamnus, Kjellmaniella and some members of Laminaria), Agarum group (Agarum, Costaria, Thalassiophyllum and Dictyoneurum), Lessonia group, and Macrocystis group (Macrocystis, Pelagophycus, Nereocystis and Postelsia). Our data support the one of the hypotheses of Setchell & Gardner (1925) that all genera may be retained under one family with tribes.
