Based on an SSU alignment for 35 ceramiacean algae, six strongly supported groups are recognized: C. nodulosum (type species) group including C. nodulosum, C. diaphanum and C. rubrum, Centroceras group, Herpochondria group including Herpochondria spp. and Microcladia borealis, C. japonicum group including C. japonicum, C. codicola and C. pacificum and M. coulteri, Reinboldiella and South African group including Reinboldiella schmitziana and Carpobleparis spp. and C. obsoletum, and C. kondoi group including C. kondoi, C. boydenii and Campylaephora spp. The phylogenetic relationships among these groups, however, are equivocal with the current alignment. The implications for the taxonomy of Ceramium within Ceramieae are discussed.
