THE IDENTIFYIT SYSTEM

Peter H. Schalk, Mauritskade 61, 1092 AD Amsterdam, TheNetherlands

The Linnaeus II 2.0 software facilitates creating taxonomic databases, construction of identification keys, and the display / comparison of distribution patterns. It contains: multimedia taxonomic databases, computer-assisted identification systems, interactive GIS, glossary, literature db. TextKey is for interactive dichotomous / polytomous keys. It is hierarchical and flexible, choices can be illustrated and inserted anywhere in the key. The key keeps track of identification path and targeted species and exports a word processor file of the key. PictKey supports hierarchical polytomous keys based on pictures, comparable with TextKey. Many pictures can be combined on a card, and texts added to each choice. IdentifyIt is based on a character-state matrix of taxa / characters. Each character state may be linked to a text, picture, sound or video. Targeted species are sorted in order of probability. The program can suggest the 'next best' option for identification, or displays the 'distance' between species.
