WHAT IS THE AMERICAN CENTAUREA MACULOSA?

Jörg Ochsmann, Institut für Pflanzengenetik und Kulturpflanzenforschung (IPK), Gatersleben, Germany

Spotted knapweed, a noxious weed in the USA, was introduced from SE Europe. According to recent research Centaurea maculosa LAM., as well as C. rhenana BOREAU, are synonyms of C. stoebe L. subsp. stoebe, which is native to W and Central Europe. Thes plants are biennial, strictly monocarpic and diploid. All the North American plants called C. maculosa are perennial, polycarpic and tetraploid (2n = 36), so they must belong to a different taxon.Parallel to the introduction into America similar plants spread over the whole of Europe. The correct name of these is C. stoebe L. subsp. micranthos (GUGLER) HAYEK (synonyms are C. biebersteinii and C. micranthos). Recent works using morphological and molecular techniques have proved that the introduced plants from North America and from Europe belong to the same taxon, C. stoebe L. subsp. micranthos (GUGLER) HAYEK.
