TAXONOMY AND PHYLOGENY IN THE FAMILY PANDANACEAE

Karmele GARCIA-HERRAN et al. Université de Neuchâtel, Switzerland Work supported by FNRS

The paleotropical family Pandanaceae comprises 3 genera: Freycinetia, Pandanus and Sararanga. Data from macro- and micromorphology suggest that Freycinetia is the most advanced, however, this shows some primitive features not observed in the other two genera. With regard to classification, in Pandanus the sections on the whole may be considered well delimited, but most subgenera are not, and the whole the main sections have been defined. In Freycinetia, on the whole the main sections have been defined, but it need go through again. The objective of this study is to tentatively: establish phylogenetic relationships between the genera of the family and improve the present classification in Pandanus. At present, the results from the sequencing of the intron trnL (UAA), for example, suggest that the Pandanus subg. Martellidendron is closest to the genus Freycinetia.
