-- MURATA, Jin*, Hiroko MURATA** & Takashi SUGAWARA*** (*Univ. Tokyo, **Setsunan Univ., ***Shinshu Univ.)

Phylogenetic relationships between various species of subgenera Aristolochia and Siphisia of the genus Aristolochia from North, Central and South America, Asia and Europe were analyzed on the bases of matK gene sequences. Both subgenera Aristolochia and Siphisia appeared to be monophyletic. In subgen Siphisia a monophyletic clade consisting of Species from Japan and Taiwan was recognized. Subgen Aristolochia was further divided into two major clades, one consisting of Central and South Amereican species and the other of species from other regions. Cytologically subgen. Siphisia is characterized by basic chromosome number X = 8.
