We newly isolated an extracellular Mn-SOD in suspension-cultured cells of a moss Barbula unguiculata. An apparent molecular mass of the protein was 120 kDa by gel filtration and that of a monomer was 22 kDa by TOF mass spectrometer. It was an Asn-linked coprotein. It had one atom of manganese per monomer. The cDNA of the Mn-SOD was isolated. The amino acid sequence deduced from the base sequence shared 49% homology with that of wheat germin gf-2.8. The protein had no oxalate oxidase activity.
