In many lichen taxa, they have discussed on the treatment of chemical compounds as characters of species. In this study, we inferred the phylogeny of Myelochroa using the 5.8S rDNA and ITS sequences, and examined if chemical compounds or morphological characters are consistent to the phylogeny. The phylogenetic tree revealed that specimens containing leucotylic acid and specimens containing galbinic acid form monophyletic groups, respectively, suggesting that existence of leucotylic acid and galbinic acid should be useful characters for the classification of Myelochroa. On the contrary, some morphological characters, which were used to define species, are revealed to be evolved in parallel. The phylogenetic analysis of photobiont is now in progress.
