MICROPHYLLY IN THE RUBIACEAE OF CUBA

Lic. Maria Cristina Martinez Martinez and Dr. Maira Fernandez Zequeira - Herbario Academia Las Ciencias (HAC), Havana, Cuba

Microphylly is an important phenomenon present in the flora of Cuba. Many species in different families display microphylly, including members of the Rubiaceae. The objective of this study is to identify the Rubiaceae of Cuba that display microphylly. Field observations and herbarium study, as well as an examination of pertinent literature, resulted in finding microphylly in 20 genera, 4 of which are endemic to Cuba. In addition to the morphological analysis of taxa, conservation status was determined for microphyllous species by taking into account their characteristic habitat types and plant communities.
