A SYNOPSIS OF THE GENUS GUETTARDA (RUBIACEAE : GUETTARDEAE) IN BRAZIL

Maria Regina de V. Barbosa (Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Brazil)

The Brazilian species of Guettarda were last revised by Mueller Argovensis in Flora Brasiliensis (1881). The genus was then recognized as having two sections, defined by fruit characters, and 15 species in Brazil. After that, a lot of new collections were made and new species were described. This treatment provides a key, synonymy, habitat descriptions, distribution and vernacular names for the 22 species of Guettarda known from Brazil. New synonyms are proposed to G. macrantha, G. platypoda and G.pohliana. The revision of the Brazilian species of Guettarda was chosen as a starting point for further investigations within the genus to the eventual revision of the species occurring in the Neotropics.
