PHYLOGENY OF RUTACEAE-AURANTIOIDEAE: MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIES, IN PARTICULAR cpDNA SEQUENCES FROM THE atpB/rbcL SPACER

Samuel,R., Greger,H.,Chase, M.W., and Ehrendorfer, F., Inst. Bot. Univ. Vienna, Austria,Roy. Bot. Gardens, Kew, UK

The plastid atpB/rbcL spacer was sequenced for 17 genera (40spp.), representing subtribes of Aurantioideae and 3 outgroups. The resulting tree agrees with data from phytochemistry, karyology and morphology. This supports circumscription of the subfamily, but suggests considerable changes in the SWINGLE & REECE 1967 grouping of genera: Clauseneae include taxa with predominance of plesiomorphic characters: Glycosmis, Micromelum, Clausena and Bergera (=Murraya s.l., p.p.), but not Murraya s.str.or Merillia. The last two and all other genera with increasingly apomorphic features belong to Citreae, but Triphasiinae, Citrinae and Balsamocitrinae appear polyphyletic. Only the true" and economically important group with Poncirus, Fortunella, Clymenia and Citrus is supported.
