The Organelle Genome Megasequencing Program (OGMP) investigates mitochondrial and chloroplast genomes from phylogenetically diverse eukaryotes by sequencing complete organellar DNAs. We have recently sequenced the mtDNAs of Naegleria gruberi and Malawimonas jakobiformis, two basally diverging protists of the group with discoidal mitochondrial cristae which includes heteroloboseans, euglenoids and kinetoplastids. Phylogenetic reconstructions and comparative analyses of gene complement and gene order will be presented as a test of current hypotheses about early eukaryote evolution.
